One of the most scenic beaches in the world, the crescent-shaped, white sand stretch of beach in the Kauna’oa Bay is truly a gem on the Big Island of Hawaii. Walking the beach
After staking out lounge chairs in the special Club section of the beach, one of our first activities is always to walk the beach a few times. This gives us time to acclimate to the weather that day and to observe the ocean – every day it is different! We are there late compared to the early morning swimmers, beach combers and runners, but it’s still quiet compared to noon. During humpback whale season in Hawaii we start scanning the horizon!
Once the waves have been assessed, we decide whether swimming, snorkelling or boogie boarding is in order. If it’s calm enough, we will also bring out the SUP or stand up paddle board for a tour of the bay. One of my favourite activities, I was once scared pretty good on the SUP by a school of dark fish sweeping under my board – thought it was one large creature instead of many smaller!
Snacking in Luxury
Enjoying a snack or lunch from the Hau Tree Bar beachside is a special treat. After salt and sand in the surf, there’s nothing better than a cool and creamy fruit smoothie! The resort recently switched to paper straws, which is a nice change and helps prevent waste. Playing in Hawaii
Building a sand castle never gets old, and keeps me young, so we often collaborate on something large that’s a safe distance from the tide – although it’s also pretty exciting to keep a walled fortress in place to shelter our castle from the incoming tide! Shells and lava rock collected along the shore serve as decorations, and we often wander the beach again later in the day to check out everyone else’s creations.
Last year we purchased a wooden paddle board beach ball set, so if we’re too hot in the lounge chairs but aren’t up for another swim, we cool off in the surf while trying to play beach tennis! I always find it so easy to be active and I always feel so good while we’re in Hawaii. Just walking in the sand is great exercise, but add in snorkelling, swimming, beach tennis or SUP and you’ve got a total body and soul workout!
